Sir David King, FRS Chief Scientific Advisor to HM Government Speaks about the Future (October 2006)
The Director of New Discovery Recruitment, Zoe Dunn, recently attended a presentation by Sir David King, FRS Chief Scientific Advisor to HM Government. Sir David was appointed as Head of Science and Technology on 1st October 2000. This office merged with the DTI’s Innovation Group on April 3rd 2006 to become the Office of Science and Innovation. Prior to this he was Head of the Department of Chemistry and Master of Downing College, University of Cambridge.
Sir David King is known by many in the scientific world for his pioneering work in colloid and Surface Chemistry for which he has received a number of highly acclaimed awards. “His presentation was inspirational and thought provoking and encouraged some lively debate” said Zoe Dunn. “It is reassuring to know that the Government’s long term vision, set out in a 10 year plan, is to make Britain one of the best places in the world for science, research and innovation – the successful exploitation of new ideas incorporating new technologies, design and best practice”.
Sir David explained that tackling the challenges of major scientific issues and promoting innovation was not all about funding, but more about proactive interpretation and acting accordingly upon the predictive models, scientific data and supporting evidence.
One of the crucial topics covered by the presentation was global warming and the ever increasing need to reduce carbon emissions and develop sustainable energy sources that do not require carbon based fuel. Having seen the models and discussed various options it became apparent that the Government had decided upon the nuclear solution, but they are investigating other more innovative technology options from wind power to fusion.
The Oxford Trust hosted this excellent evening, which was attended by a number of scientists and business names in the scientific technology arena. The Trust www.oxtrust.org.uk actively assists the growth of technology businesses, encourages collaborative knowledge transfer between industry and research, involves the public in Science Oxford activities and supports the teaching of science and technology in schools.
“I believe that scientific innovation is all about sharing a passion for new ideas in science and technology and collaborating with those who can help to turn concept into reality” said Zoe Dunn. “I am very excited about the future, secure in the knowledge that the Government and organisations such as The Oxford Trust are so supportive and enthusiastic about encouraging positive growth and new discovery in the Science and Technology Sector”.
